The third album from Ireland's Mael Mordha continues their trend of producing good folksy doom metal. Describing their sound is very hard since I haven't heard many bands that sound like this one. Their music features mid-paced songs with big, epic riffs that are mixed with Celtic influences to create a unique sound. Once you've heard songs like "The Doom of the Races of Eire" and the title track, you'll understand what I'm talking about.

I have listened to their previous two albums and found them to be good. For this one, the band haven't really change the formula that much, although it is rawer and the guitars don't sound quite as heavy. But really what this band offers is an atmosphere that very few groups can match. The record features many foreign instruments, from flutes, whistles to pianos and they all make a difference in their songs, creating that folksy sound. If you like groups like Primordial, then you'll be right at home when listening to this.

Manannan could have been a better album if the songs weren't so similar to one another. Barring a few exceptions, I needed a lot of concentration to differentiate them. Because of this, the album as a whole requires a lot of time to fully appreciate. Also there is a distinct lack of guitar leads, something that I've never liked, but considering the band's style, it isn't that big of a deal.

Bottom line, if you liked their previous two albums there is no reason why you should avoid this. The first time that I heard this I was prepared to crucify it, but with repeated listens I came to like it more and more. If you're also listening to this band for the first time you may as well give the album time, you might be surprised.
