A Tortured Soul are a band who play "dark" Heavy Metal, which is to say they are pretty much channeling old Mercyful Fate and trying to sound badass. In places this works, but overall I don't find this band that exciting. The production is okay – nothing special. The guitars sound pretty good, but the drum sound is crap. Vocalist Rick Black is a weak point, as he is pretty one-note. He throws out some iffy falsetto vocals here and there, but for the most part he sticks to an extremely boring midrange with little passion or charisma. He just sounds bored a lot of the time. There are some decent riffs here, but nothing that really grabs you. A Tortured Soul do have the right idea, and I like their approach. But after three albums, if they were going to produce a classic I think they would have done it by now. Not a bad album, but not that good either.
