Manticora is another one of those bands that I had heard about but never had any of their music. They are a power metal band from Denmark and if I had to compare them to any one band in particular I would have to go with the band Blind Guardian. This is their third full-length release with "Roots of Eternity" (Black Lotus) and "Darkness with Tales to Tell" (Scarlet) being their others.
The album itself is a concept album based on the book "Hyperion" by Dan Simmons. I am sure there are a number of people reading this review and thinking to yourself "Oh great, another concept power metal album, how original." To be completely honest that was the first thought that crossed my mind as well but then I listened to the album and found myself more than a little impressed. Putting the concept aside and just focusing on the music (that is the important part after all.) I found this album to actually be very good. I mentioned earlier the band reminds me a bit of Blind Guardian and that is simply due to two factors. The more aggressive sound that BG had in their earlier work and the complexity displayed in their later work. The vocals are also heavier than you will normally find for a power metal band but they still have good range in both scale and emotional delivery. The guitars are also worthy of note with some absolutely shredding solo’s that still incorporate a good dose of melody.
Overall a very good album that fans of power metal will certainly enjoy and fans of Blind Guardian will love. Highly Recommended
