One off album here from Sweden's Fi5th Reason, a vehicle for one time Wuthering Heights and Tad Morose vocalist Kristian Andren. Within Or Without is a tidy release, but ultimately quite boring, plodding along with all the speed of a doom record though still idling in the Progressive Metal field. Thing is, even though I love Andren and his cold vocals, he isn't used to the best of his ability here, with "Nighttime Wishes" and "Only Angels Know" making him sound tired and strained. The riffs here are all heavy and sludgy, never as exciting as they should be, and on the whole this is dark stuff, leaving you feeling troubled by its oppressive atmosphere.

Though the production is of a professional standard and the musicianship, when it gets more interesting in the middle of each track, is also well rendered, Within Or Without meanders too much, wandering from piece to piece without engaging you in any way. It's a shame, because it does have its moments; "River Of Lust" begins with a promising riff, and "Whore" has an angry Redemption vibe, but really there are much better releases out there. Go and get them.
