Finnish guitarist and, apparently, workaholic, Pete Ahonen is back in the public eye with band #3, Stargazery and their debut album Eye on the Sky. Despite a name that rolls somewhat clumsily off the tongue and an album title quite close to an Alan Parsons Project song, Stargazery is another solid project for Ahonen. His fret board wizardry is complemented quite well by the vocals of former Masterstroke singer Jari Tiura, who, based on this album, should probably be better known than he is.
Eye on the Sky is full of mid-tempo Heavy Metal, heavy on the guitar but with a healthy dose of keyboards, courtesy of the ubiquitous Marco Sneck. The style is similar to classic Dio, with big riffs and flawless solos, while the keyboards lend a Silent Force sound. As Ahonen writes the music, it's not surprising to hear his other bands, Burning Point and Ghost Machinery, here and there, as well. Tiura's vocals are strong and powerful, almost Coverdale-like, especially when he goes for the lower register. Otherwise, he booms out the mid-range and holds his own well against the back drop of Ahonen's guitar work and Sneck's keyboards. None of the songs are weak, though; other than the speedy title track, none really jumps out and grabs you either. And I guess that's the only gripe I have with Eye on the Sky; it just isn't quite as exciting as Ghost Machinery or Burning Point.
More solid, enjoyable metal music from Pete Ahonen, that is a little more "Heavy" than "Power" this time around, is what you can expect from Eye on the Sky. If you like his other projects or just want some straight up Heavy/Power Metal, check it out.
