Sadistic Grimness hail from Sweden, and play a blend of suitably filthy death, black and thrash metal. Their sound is predominantly death metal, but stab wounds of black and thrash leak out all over the length of Asteni. The band nailed a pretty neat mix of the instruments, with the production standing somewhere between Repugnant's Epitome of Darkness and Tribulation's The Horror. There is good clarity and excellent audible bass but the overall sound is still dusty and dingy, almost like it had scraped and clawed its way out from a hole in the earth.
The band takes on a load of influence from the old school on Asteni, and they never verge on outright plagiarism. The tracks range from fast blasting black/thrash, to more Entombed-style breaks, with slower sections hewn between the most opportune moments. Sadistic Grimness give the listener everything they want, but I still feel they have a ways to go before they catch up with their competition. There are a lot of bands mining the vein of old school Swedish death metal, and Sadistic Grimness are among the better acts I've heard, along with bands such as Tribulation, Repugnant and Demonical. Boasting great bass, and above average songwriting there is a definitely place for Sadistic Grimness in their scene, and I'd gladly take this over bands like Mr. Death. Recommended.
