Doooooooooooooooom. Heavy, miserable, drugged-out Black Sabbath worship, think Electric Wizard, think Lord Vicar, think early Cathedral, think complete and utter despair. An atmosphere that is going to hypnotize, then suffocate you. Rhode Island's Pilgrim are a band who play doom straight out of the fucking handbook, but in a genre where experimenting is almost forbidden, this is exactly what any doom fan worth their Sabbath and Saint Vitus records would want.

Like I said, heavy, wretched, suffocating, Misery Wizard does exactly what it says on the tin. The band really do well in conjuring the power of the riff here, I guarantee you'll be humming them whilst getting about the kitchen or whatever it is you do. The album is jam-packed with bleak passages of complete and utter riff bludgeon, classic lead playing breaks it up and the vocals are just bloody great. Powerful, and not overtly flashy, think a more operatic Mike Scalzi. The rhythm section is pretty damn mighty too, with an exceptionally heavy drum performance, the drummer hits every beat like he would his last. The bass, whilst maybe not as adventurous or wandering as I would have liked, offers an earthen low end that really rumbles the pits of your bowels.

With killer slices of world-smashing doom such as the title track or the complete and utter ruin of "Master of the Sky", Pilgrim really delivers on their debut Misery Wizard. There are a lot of bands mining the doom vein right now, and truth be told a lot of them are similar. Pilgrim are hardly original, although what they do is offer an enthralling release, let this suck you in and you'll come out a glorious wreck. Doom fans need this.
