Well, this rips. The Creatures of the Black EP contained a couple of original M-pire of Evil songs but let's face it, they were overshadowed by the four great covers of known songs. Those two originals are not on this album, but the stuff here makes you forget about that and, well, "covers? What covers?" Hell of the Holy proves that M-pire of Evil are more than about well-done catchy cover songs.
This is relentless, fast-paced, energetic, catchy Speed/Thrash, and M-pire of Evil do an excellent job at marrying underground and somewhat commercial sounds. It's heavy and dark, with raw, raucous vocals, but at the same time this material just instantly sticks in your head, and it's almost impossible to shake off. Take old and new Venom, make it more "refined", and throw in a bit of a party vibe and you get Hell to the Holy. The mix of fast-paced numbers with slower, crushingly heavy ones keeps this interesting from beginning to end. Admittedly this has more of a modern vibe than an old school one, and when it comes to Thrash this usually annoys the hell out of me (a couple of listens and I've had enough), but these guys got it right. I've been listening to this stuff almost daily for more than three weeks and I have yet to grow tired of it.
It's not the most original thing out there, but M-pire of Evil more than make up for it in execution. Nothing wimpy about this sucker, and a refreshing change from most of the Thrash being released lately.
