The latest release by Canadian thrashers Annihilator features new vocalist Joe Comeau, former guitarist with Overkill. His vocal performance is definitely the highlight of this album. With standard thrash-type vocals dominating the album, Comeau also shows up some Halfordesque screams, and even manages to sound like Bon Scott on the band's AC/DC-sounding track, their tribute to that band. Carnival Diablos effectively shows Comeau as a top-notch vocalist with a very broad range.
The album starts off with a pretty energetic song, although I find the opening riff kind of sucks. Fortunately things get better, although that same riff reappears on occasion... I don't know, that little, simple riff just annoys me. Can't like 'em all I guess. Things do get better afterwards however, with some good thrashing songs. Worth mentionning is their AC/DC tribute which, rather than being a cover of a song by that band, is a new composition that was written with an AC/DC sound. Considering the overdose of cover songs we've been served in the past few years, this is a refreshing approach. The song is a simple, good rocker, just like AC/DC does them. Other than that, an instrumental ballad gives some breathing room towards the end of the album.
There is some bonus track about chicken and corn at the end of the album. I don't know what the hell this is about, but it annoys me when bands add such a goofy song to an otherwise very good album. You guessed it, that makes for a very shitty ending. Anyways, I'll live. Carnival Diablos is a very good album by a band that needs no introduction. If you've liked past albums from Annihilator, you should dig this.
