Black Majesty are like sex: even when they're not great, they're pretty good. This is a band that didn't take off into the stratosphere like I hoped, and they may never quite match the highs of Silent Company, but every few years they give us another solid Power Metal album.
Stargazer is without a doubt their most consistent work, as even if it has no songs quite as good as "Silent Company" or "Guardian", it is a really solid album from beginning to end. John Cavaliere continues to rather unpretentiously go about being one of the best vocalists in metal, and the playing and arrangements are rock-solid and completely pro in both approach and execution. Songs like "Killing Hand" and "Journey to the Soul" are among the catchiest songs this band has ever penned, and in fact every song has good hooks, with no real filler cuts this time out. The production is oddly a bit soft this time around, with a mix that is a touch too muddy for this band and a muted overall sound that does not suit the music at all. This is sharp, bright, glossy metal that should sound HUGE, but somehow doesn't.
I keep being slightly dissatisfied with Black Majesty albums, and that's while they are always good, they are never as good as their first few albums promised they could be. Not every band is capable of masterwork, but this one is, and so I will keep hoping they manage it.
