Who would have guessed a band called Macbeth would be from Germany and play Heavy/Thrash vs. being from Britain and playing some variation of Pagan/Doom? Not me, though the album title, Wiedergänger, should have clued me in. This is some truly ass-kicking stuff, right from the opener, "Kamikaze" through the closer, "Macbeth." There are acoustic parts, but they are few and far between as Macbeth just put the pedal to the metal and let it rip. The vocals are gravelly and spat out like rounds from a machine gun. That they are mostly in German only adds to the rough and abusive feel. Musically, Macbeth reminds me of Rebellion, though less catchy. The playing seems to capture the atmosphere the band is striving for but the songwriting isn't on the same level. I wanted to like this more but even after several listens I just can't remember much about it when it isn't on. If you want your Metal to pummel you about the head and neck, Wiedergänger will happily do that for you. You may not remember much about the listening experience afterward, but the concussion you're likely to suffer might have done the same thing anyway.
