Dismember, Nihilist, Carnage; US old-school deathsters Abysme have done such an amazing job of adopting the sound of the Swedish Death Metal scene that even an experienced consumer of this type of stuff could get totally confused. If someone told me Strange Rites, Abysme's debut studio album, was a long-lost recording from Sweden's Carnage or Dismember, I would probably buy it without any hesitation.
Expect no less from Strange Rites than low, down-tuned, buzz-saw guitar riffs, dark and moody melodies and Matti Kärki-style death growls. Give Abysme credit for being the most Swedish-sounding American Death Metal band around. That's exactly what Strange Rites sounds like to me; a collection of early Swedish Death Metal, shamelessly yet very convincingly churned out. Abysme rule in the old ruins.
