Collecting Norwegian underground act Old Funeral's past material together for a 2-CD set was bound to happen. This set, very aptly and cleverly titled Our Condolences 1988-1992, contains all the essential music Old Funeral ever recorded, from the band's rare 7-track 1989 debut demo The Fart That Should Not Be (ha-ha, what a crazy title), that was limited to 50 copies, to the band's official 1990 demo, Abduction of Limbs, and 1991's Devoured Carcass EP. In addition, there is lots of live stuff, some decent sounding, some not, most of which seems to be taken from old soundboard recordings, especially on disc two. These two discs contain everything you need from Old Funeral. The best things are the studio recordings. It's interesting to hear how Old Funeral tried to adopt Slayer-style Thrash riffs on their The Fart That...demo. On the band's better-sounding second demo, Abduction of Limbs, those Slayer influences were still present but, at the same time, these young teens also tried to bring some of their own music. By the 3-track Devoured Carcass EP, Old Funeral sounded like a very different band; more like a grinding Death Metal act, doing the same, largely accepted Death/Grind style that so many other bands did in those days. These three recordings alone make it worth purchasing this collection. I personally didn't care much for any of the live stuff but I am certain some of you will appreciate it more than I did. There is no denying that this is absolutely the best collection you can find of Old Funeral. So, say goodbye to your earlier Old Funeral bootlegs and buy this instead. At the same time, you will support the labels that continue putting out rare and cult stuff like this.
