Frosthelm's The Northwinds Rend Flesh starts out with some decent Black/Thrash and the occasional Death Metal growl. Musically, it is the epitome of "nothing new" as the songs sound like innumerable other bands. That doesn't make them bad and certainly the riffs, played at speed, and the general looseness of the songs are fine examples of the style. The vocals are the problem. The Black rasps and Death growls are pretty standard but by the second song, "Goblindriver," the rasps change from shouts to a screech that sounds like a cat being dragged slowly backward through a wood chipper. While I give Frosthelm credit for trying something new, that something makes me want to shut off The Northwinds Rend Flesh as soon as it starts. Hopefully Frosthelm has some other tricks up their collective sleeve. |
