Germany's Suidakra have been at this melodic/folk Black/Death thing for nearly 20 years and 2013's Eternal Defiance is album #11. It is full of what you've come to expect from these veterans; harsh vocals, beautiful melodies and a huge sound. Songs like "Inner Sanctum" and "March of Conquest" are epic in their sweep and the use of keys to fill up space. "Beneath the Red Eagle" is almost Power Metal with its quick tempo and clean female vocals. There are a couple of acoustic numbers with mainly clean singing, "The Mindsong" and "Damnatio Memoriae," that might be a little too folky for hardcore Black/Death fans, but I think the counterpoint to the aggression of the rest of the album works well. If I could give Suidakra one do-over it would be the pipes on "Pair Dadeni" which are so monotonous and repetitive, I had to skip the song.

Minor issues aside, Suidakra have carved a nice niche for themselves, combining Death, Black, Folk and Epic elements into a cohesive sound. Eternal Defiance offers something for fans of just about every stripe.
