There are some excellent riffs on Shrine from Kansas' Ashes of Tyranny. The guitar tone is raw and gritty and I tapped my foot or strummed the air guitar often when listening to it. If that is all there was to Shrine, I'd have liked it a lot better. The lyrics deal with personal issues and while there's nothing wrong with that, Ashes of Tyranny's sound is far more angst-ridden and "woe-is-me" than you might want from your Heavy Metal. The vocals are doleful, like the lyrics, and sound like a metal version of Eddie Vedder. Throw in some trendy harsh shouts and you've got something with the foundation of Heavy Metal but that is much closer to "modern" metal. The members of Ashes of Tyranny are competent musicians, but their musical direction is going to leave most Heavy Metal fans cold.
