Symbol of Loss is the debut EP from Los Angeles, California's Black Metal duo Averse Concept. If the name wasn't enough of a clue, Averse Concept isn't your typical Black Metal band, though they do have their fair share of raspy shrieks and howls and dark lyrics. The music is as progressive as any other style of Metal. The time changes are frequent, the strumming occasionally esoteric, and the songs just have an overall feels as if they were written after listening to Threshold or Lanfear and then dragged through the River Styx for a few seconds. This might sound cool, and there's nothing wrong with the playing, but the songs are bland and just kind of sit there. The singer is doing his best to sound evil and tortured but he doesn't sell the pain and strays into "core" yapping once in a while. This is an independent release so some measure of slack needs to be cut but Symbol of Loss' sound, nevertheless, lacks punch.
I don't want to deter a young band, but Averse Concept is only hinting at what might be with Symbol of Loss. They'll need to tighten up the songwriting and the focus if they want to take the next step.
