Townsend, Massachusetts' Armory have been around since 2001 and Empyrean Realms is their second full-length album. This is not to say the band's debut, The Dawn of Enlightenment, had anything particularly wrong with it, but Empyrean Realms is a huge step forward in almost every way.

Empyrean Realms explodes with the Power/Progressive fury of "Eternal Mind," a track that skillfully marries crunchy guitar riffs with technical keyboard runs. Power Metal anthems like "Fate Seeker" and "Dreamstate" continue that trend and will have you tapping your foot and breaking out either the guitar or keytar (or maybe both), before you step up the microphone for "Beyond the Horizon." This song has easily the catchiest chorus I've heard in quite a while. The album closes with "Quest for the Fleece," a 7-minute epic based on the story of Jason and the Argonauts. While it might not be the equal of "To Tame a Land" or "Rime of the Ancient Mariner," "Quest for the Fleece" has the same effect of ending the album on a high note. The production on Empyrean Realms is stellar and the band has obviously spent a lot of time making sure everything is just right and every musician involved is firing on all cylinders.

Armory, like their hometown Red Sox in 2013, has hit one out of the park. The band takes the Power Metal brilliance of Black Majesty, adds a dash of Infinity Divine-era Pagan's Mind Progressive Metal, shines it to a high polish and hands us a gem in the form of Empyrean Realms.
