Opus Atlantica is a project band from Pete Sandberg who is also in Midnight Sun, Jade, Allen to name a few. This project also includes more than a few brilliant musicians. You have Jonas Reingold on bass and keyboards, Jaime Salazar on the drums and one of my favorite new guitarists on the scene Johan Reinholdz. All of this talent is put to very good work on a power metal album that may just be in some top ten lists by years end.
The majority of the songs are all up-tempo with very good hooks and sing along style choruses. Every musician on this album does a killer job and comes out sounding like the band has been together forever. I could go on and on about the musicianship with lots of descriptive terms that all pretty much mean the same thing and that is simply that this kicks ass. I will have to give particular mention to Johan Reinholdz since the guitar work on this album is simply incredible. The catchy riffs and melody lines alone are worth the price of admission and add to that some jaw dropping leads and the guitar work really starts to stand out. As much as I was disappointed by the new Andromeda album from young Mr. Reinholdz is how much in the other direction I liked his work on display here.
Overall this album didn’t really surprise me with its quality since all of the excellent musicians involved but it did make me think that hopefully this band will continue forth past this release. With the amount of the different bands the members here are a part of this may be relegated to a minor thought and that would truly be a shame. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
