Everything you need to know about this Brazilian band is revealed once you know that their name comes from title of Hellhammer's 1984 EP, Apocalyptic Raids. Only Death Is Real... is the band's debut album from 2001, being released in 2014 on vinyl by Hell's Headbangers, and it is pure Hellhammer/Celtic Frost worship from start to finish. Muddy, chaotic and evil Speed/Death/Thrash Metal abounds. Like their spiritual inspirations, the vocals are a throaty, undecipherable growl/yell, the guitars a tortured screech and the drums the sound of impending doom heading the listeners way. Authentic? Yes! Inspiring? Not so much. This stuff is the epitome of "you've heard it before." That doesn't mean it isn't any good, however. And by that, I'm not referring to the playing, because that is authentically sloppy and the band bangs away at their instruments with little heed paid to what anyone else is doing. But since that was what Apokalyptic Raids were going for, my hat is off to them. No, what I mean is, if I really want to hear stuff like this, I'm reaching for To Mega Therion, that's all.

If you live and breathe early Celtic Frost, Hellhammer and even Possessed, Only Death Is Real... is probably in your collection already. If not, and you are looking for something raw and blasphemous, this lovingly created vinyl reissue of Apokalyptic Raids' debut would love to desecrate your turntable.
