Modern, melodic Death Metal seems to divide people into two leagues; you either like it or despise it. It may not be as black and white as I stated but regardless, Danish quintet Aphyxion, despite the band members' young ages (they played nearly 100 shows before the age of 20), seems to be making positive waves among Metal people and have even played at festivals such as Wacken Open Air and Copenhell. Good for them.
The band's debut album goes by the name Earth Entangled and what it represents musically, it does so proudly, I suppose. Modern, melodic, groovy and thrashy Death Metal is what it is and Earth Entangled is excellently produced, as well (produced by Jacob Hansen at Hansen Studios). To their credit, Aphyxion sound well rehearsed and tight but the question is what's on here to make it stand out from the many other modern Metal bands with similar sounds? Well, nothing; it's as simple as that. Occasionally, they made me think there was something special to their sound but then I stopped daydreaming. Having said this, there is an audience for this stuff, but it doesn't include me. Maybe if I was 20 years younger...
