Well here's a little MCD that I'm in no rush to get out of the CD player every time I listen to it. I've seen the band compared to Sentenced, but I'm not familiar with them enough to make the same comparison. Almost immediately noticeable are some similarities between the vocalist and James Hetfield (post- AJFA), although Misery Inc.'s vocalist clearly has a better voice capable of better carrying his emotions... The similarities are nonetheless striking, especially on the slower passages. Musically this is a bit of a mix of aggressive and more "happy" music. The band has done a very good job throwing in a lot of melody while still maintaining a pretty aggressive edge, except on "Life Ain't Fair" which is the slowest song here, with quite a depressing mood (the title couldn't be more fitting.) The vocals on this one are very melodic and kind of agonizing (in a good way ;)), contrary to the other songs which are more up-beat and therefore call for more strength and aggressivity - in all cases the singer delivers the goods. I'd go as far as to say that the vocals are the highlight of this CD. Some musical elements remind me a little of pre-suckage In Flames and the lighter Children of Bodom material - nothing to scream "rip-off", however: Taken as a whole, Misery Inc. do not sound like these bands, and that's not just because of the clean vocal style they use. ;)
I'm not familiar with the band's previous material, but this MCD showcases some relatively accessible metal that should please those who like both aggressivity AND strong melodic tones in their metal. I'm surprised no label has picked them up yet, especially considering they have the kind of sound that's been pretty popular for the past couple of years.
