This is another UK band mining that strike of slightly retro, female-fronted Doom. Now, I do love some of these bands - like Jex Thoth - even if they are sometimes too consciously retro for their own good. Like a lot of these modern Doom bands, Alunah are just playing it too safe - smooth, familiar guitar sound, derivative riffs that never jump out at you, and vocals that are just a step removed from generic. I'm not saying I don't like this - the title track in particular conjures up some really haunting melodies and is a first-rate song - but this has all been done before, and done better. I would so love to hear this band really kick it out with blaring heaviness and crushing riffs. In other words, I would like them to sound not so fucking mellow. This is enjoyable, but extremely laid back and derivative.
