Agonous is an extremely new (founded in May 2014) one-man Death Metal band from Texas, helmed by a gent named Foul Phil. Phil's other band, Flatulated, is self-described as "childishly gross" so I guess his name is appropriate. Agonous seems to be a more serious endeavor, judging by the lyrics which deal with more political and inner-struggle themes. That should make it no surprise that the music is quite thrashy and melodic, like a lot of late 80s/early 90s Thrash bands. The vocals are pure American Death Metal cookie-monster grunts and growls with a decipherable word here and there. There's nothing on the debut, United We Serve, Divided We Crawl, that hasn't been done before so Agonous isn't bringing anything new to the party and the songwriting (and playing) is tight but derivative. Agonous is competent but not particularly inspiring so Foul Phil's got some work ahead if he wants to make American Death Metal fans turn their ears from their Carcass and Death albums.
