Accursed Spawn hail from my hometown of Ottawa, Canada, and I had been meaning to check them out live for a while, but the timing has so far been against me. So here comes their Putrid EP and, let's get by biggest beef out right away: as with any good EP, it's too damn short. Tease!
The intro is an acoustic instrumental, which is not unusual for Death Metal bands that play it pedal-to-the-metal, but since the EP is just under 19 minutes, losing a minute and a half to such an intro is kind of annoying. Thankfully, the remaining time is a bitch-slap of pummeling, speedy, relentless Death Metal. A barrage of thunderous drums is complemented by sometimes intricate guitar work that will just tear you ears apart. These guys barely slow down long enough for you to take half a breath. Accursed Spawn also manage to blend in a bit of melody without pussifying their sound. The vocals are just like I like them in Death Metal – just standard growls, no pig squeals or any crap like that.
The short length remains the most maddening thing here. It always feels like it just started when it ends, so hopefully they have a full-length album in the oven.
