......Return of the Old Goat is the second full-length from Mexico's Black Metal duo Funereus. This is a short (just under 32 minutes), bruising trip back to the dawn of Black Metal when bands like Slayer, Possessed and Celtic Frost were laying the groundwork for what would become the style we know and love/loathe today. The vocals are a tortured screech and the music is fast and relentless. There's still a lot of melody in Funereus' playing and the riffing is as much Thrash-based as it is tremolo picked, one of the main things that recalls the late 80s. The songwriting is OK with nothing particularly noteworthy while the vocal lines are fairly monotonous and become tiresome after only a short while. ......Return of the Old Goat is a decent reminder of the early days of Black Metal but not anything essential.
