I liked Guerra Total's last album, El Armagedón Continúa, so I was looking forward to their fifth album, 2014's Cthulhu Zombies & Anti-Cosmic Black Goats. If the title wasn't enough of a clue this Columbian group has gone all Lovecraftian on us. Musically, we're still talking Black/Thrash with lots of speed though it sounds to me like it is shifting away from the Venom influences, past Celtic Frost and into the realm of some of the early Black Metal bands. The drumming approaches inhuman speed and the guitars, while retaining a lot of Thrash elements in the riffing and solos, are colder and less melodic. The lyrics are odes to old ones (some in English, some in Spanish) with the cherry on the top of the evil, joyless sundae the track "Iä! Iä! Cthulhu Fhtagn!" a phrase even us Lovecraft neophytes are familiar with.

With Cthulhu Zombies & Anti-Cosmic Black Goats, Guerra Total have struck a pretty good balance between early Black/Thrash and later Black Metal that should be palatable to fans of both genres. It isn't the most amazing thing you'll ever hear but it is most definitely entertaining and fans of the Cthulhu stories are going to have a shitload of fun screaming the chorus of "Iä! Iä! Cthulhu Fhtagn!" I know I did.
