It isn't often a 3-song EP hits me as hard as Prayed and Betrayed's The Abundance of a Sickened Mind has, not to mention that it is Death Metal which isn't my favorite genre. But the fact is these guys have written some absolutely killer Thrash riffs and play them in the classic, late 80s style of Forbidden and Vio-lence enhanced with sweet lead guitar work. The vocals are a non-descript Death Metal shout and, as a result, neither add nor detract from the songs (no silly puking/burping here) while the battery is rock-solid. All three songs are simple, unpretentious and kick all kinds of ass. Prayed and Betrayed smartly vary the tempo and give all the instruments and vocals room to be heard resulting in songs that are heavy without sacrificing melody or clarity. No, there's nothing here you haven't heard before but it is played as well as any of the greats so if you dig late 80s Thrash and don't mind/really enjoy Death Metal singing you have got to lay your hands on The Abundance of a Sickened Mind. You will not be disappointed. |
