Long-running Czech Death Metal pioneers Pandemia have returned after six years without any official records. At the Gates of Nihilism is Pandemia’s fifth full-length studio album and it’s one of their best yet in my book.
Pandemia’s line-up has remained the same since their previous album, Feet of Anger, was released on War Anthem Records in 2009. These Czechs have had time to prepare their next lethal attack and they have used their time wisely when it comes to the new material on At the Gates of Nihilism, I must admit.
Pandemia’s performance reeks of the quality elements one can expect from a well-crafted Death Metal opus. The playing is tight and strong, the songs flow effortlessly and they kick ass. Then again they have been around for 20 years so at some point all that musical experience pays off. Pandemia must also be given credit for adding some more progressive and experimental elements into their Death Metal as well as taking advantage of their instrumental skills. "Godless Bitch" must be one of the better tunes Pandemia has ever penned. What a godlessly awesome track, especially the chorus. "Cult of God", which is a fast-paced and shamelessly captivating song, is equally awesome. Last but not least, Pandemia’s cover version done of Loudblast’s "After Thy Thought" sounds pretty cool and does just enough justice to the original version from the French Death/Thrash heroes.
As I said earlier, At the Gates of Nihilism is Pandemia’s most coherent and well-written album to date, in humble my opinion. I am pretty certain the guys in Pandemia would agree. ;o)
