A Progressive Metal band that isn't aping Dream Theater nor rolling in as many disparate influences as possible and hoping it somehow gels, you say? Second Brain is an Italian outfit and Synthesis is their debut full-length. On it, they sound like a band with a plan to have an individual sound but one with form and structure. The guitars are thick and meaty with Thrash-based riffs and the vocals are a glass-gargling roar that has hints of Lemmy and Joakim Broden. On top of these foundational elements Second Brain layers oddly-timed passages, unusual guitar work and weird keyboard sounds. And here's what makes it all work; Second Brain never lets the "progressive" elements overtake the song and always comes back to the foundation. This allows the listener to have an undercurrent of continuity while still enjoying the deviations from the norm. The songwriting is not great, at least not yet, but I never once got bored with Synthesis even though I can't remember many specifics. "Synthesis," indeed; I see what Second Brain did there. If you want something different that is still undeniably Metal, this is an album to seek out.
