Blizzard Hunter is Peruvian band whose members clearly spun Queensryche's debut EP and first full-length quite a bit. Heavy Metal to the Vein is the band's debut album and it is just packed with tight, speedy riffs, high-pitched vocals and 80s-era lyrics dealing with Metal (the title track), otherworldly figures ("Ghost Rider") and the like. The vocals aren't as good as classic Tate but singer Sebastian "Dragon" Palma gives it his all and generally does a pretty good job. The guitars have a great sound, the riffs are catchy and the solos well played if slightly less than spectacular. Like early Queensryche, the songwriting is mostly straight up traditional Metal with little of the progressiveness of the Seattle legends' later works. Even the backing vocals (check out the title track) are reminiscent of songs like "Child of Fire." The band's energy level is high and the playing spirited but the songwriting isn't quite at the same level and there just isn't any real killer material but neither are there any duds. It's above average stuff from start to finish.
Blizzard Hunter is a band with a ton of promise so now might be the best time to get on the bandwagon because if they can up the ante on the next album anyone who misses Heavy Metal to the Vein is going to be a step behind.
