Purgatory is the third full-length from Canada's Borealis and borrows so much from Masterplan that if I didn't know otherwise I would have assumed it was a new album from Roland Grapow and crew. That isn't to say Purgatory is bad, just the opposite. The gruff but clear vocals, crunchy riffs and melodic keyboards sound every bit as good as other bands playing this style. There's a bit of Fifth Angel to the vocal lines as well, which is always appreciated. Where Purgatory is lacking is in the songwriting. It is an album full of serviceable Power Metal tunes that aren't truly good enough to separate the album from the pack. If you like Masterplan, Helloween (the Deris era) and bands of that ilk you'll probably enjoy Purgatory just fine just don't expect anything you haven't heard many times before. |
