Review

Portugal's Monolith Moon is a Progressive Metal band and on their debut EP Leylines they display some pretty good chops. The vein of Prog they are mining is one that you might also see bands like Anubis Gate or Pagan's Mind working, though Monolith Moon have a lot of work to do in the songwriting department. I kept thinking that I'd heard many of the riffs and vocal lines as I listened to Leylines and I don't listen to a whole lot of Progressive Metal apart from Rush, a band Monolith Moon surely lists among their influences. The songs have plenty of time changes and fanciful keyboard runs but nothing in the way of hooks that made me want to go back and listen again and again. There is promise so Progressive fans will want to keep an eye on Monolith Moon to see if they can ramp up songwriting on their next effort.
