Death Metal from France for a change... This trio, known as Abyssal Ascendant, plays technical, very unorthodox, and ear-challenging Death Metal inspired by H.P. Lovecraft which offers no easy way in – or even out. This Death Metal patrol's 10-track debut album, titled Chronicles of the Doomed Worlds - Part. I: Enlightenment from Beyond (what a word monster there, huh!), is pretty challenging in terms of technical and demanding song structures. Abyssal Ascendant gives an overdose of fast, technical and brutal "Cthulhu Mythos" Death Metal for those who crave for it.
At times they remind me of Nile while at other times of such old-school Death Metal names as Morgoth, Pestilence, Hate Eternal, Morbid Angel and even Demilich and Necrophagist (due to some unexpected twists and turns within their songs), so their sound is really a mix of bands from the more extreme side of the genre. The vocal patterns are shared between Florent (who at times sounds deceptively much like Antti Boman of Demilich) and female bassist Fanny, who is surprisingly able to deliver death grunts similar to Martin van Drunen's. Just as a trio, Abyssal Ascendant has managed to put together a solid Death Metal album that definitely appeals to fans of the technical and highly complex variety. Besides introducing themselves as a Death Metal unit full of musical trickiness and all kinds of complexity and extremity, fortunately there's still a lot of depth and dark atmosphere in their songs.
Chronicles of the Doomed Worlds – Part. I: Enlightenment from Beyond is a very strong and convincing tour de force from this French Death Metal unit. Recommended... even for your worst enemies.
