Assignment is a German band that despite a non-Metal name plays a satisfyingly heavy brand of Progressive Heavy Metal on Closing the Circle, their fourth album but my first time hearing them. The vocals are the glue that holds Closing the Circle together as they are strong in a Ronnie James Dio kind of way. The songs themselves are well put together and on the less technical side, so you're going to hear the riffs breathe as opposed to being smothered with fanciful keyboards and odd time signatures. Tracks like "Evolution" and "Genetic Slavery" have catchy choruses with more pedestrian ones on "Taste for Sin" and "Crimson Poison" but the overall songwriting is above average. If a cross between early Dio and Threshold (or anything Nils Patrick Johansson has been involved in but 100 times better) sounds good, I recommend checking out Closing the Circle. |
