The second album from strongly NWOBHM-laden metallers Arkham Witch's, Legions of the Deep (2012), has been completely remastered and comes with three bonus live tracks (two of which are previously unreleased, "Shadow of the Vampire" and "Yog-Sothoth", sounding actually darn good as live versions) and also an additional title to the original one, Respawned. Early Priest, Witchfinder General, Cirith Ungol, Pentagram, Manilla Road, Saint Vitus, etc. are bands that obviously have had some sort of an influence on Arkham Witch. While listening to Legions of the Deep Respawned, it's easy to understand why Arkham Witch gets so often connected to all – or at least some – of these aforementioned acts. Arkham Witch is sort of a 'play-it-safe' institution. They sound familiar, appealing, entertaining, teeny-weeny mysterious and yes, almost too safe on their second album, but then again that's how we want them in the first place also, right? All instrumentation has been left to a minimum, which is naturally the main thing of their whole sound as well; to capture that old vibe of both 70s and 80s. Arkham Witch also have a bit more to offer from their musical repertoire than just some proto-Doom and NWOBHM-reeking idolatry. Take for example the song "Infernal Machine" in which the band switches a bit of a Thrash gear on, managing to sound somewhat mean and powerful. There's really nothing about Arkham Witch that metal heads shouldn't like. Like I mentioned before, playing your cards safe in terms of making music pays off sometimes, and I think that's exactly what has happened with Arkham Witch's Legions... Respawned. Good, entertaining stuff here, no doubt. |
