The Grinding Wheel is the 18th full-length album from New York natives and "Next Four" Thrash legends Overkill. With recent solid releases like The Electric Age and White Devil Armory fresh in my mind, I was excited to hear this new one but that excitement was soon tempered with Overkill's efforts this time around. The band's strengths include their signature East Coast Thrash sound and the vocals of singer Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth. Guitarists Dave Linsk and Derek Tailer play their instruments with purpose and the lead work on The Grinding Wheel is rather inventive. Sadly, the vocal lines and lyrics can't match the guitars. I would have bet real money I'd never hear Blitz sing lines like "someone left the cat out in the rain" ("Shine On") or "I like the scent of a woman's hair" ("Come Heavy") but there they are. And if I have to hear Blitz shout, "we've walked the long road, a thousand times before!" in "The Long Road" one more time I may stick an ice pick in my ears. It is clear Overkill was trying something new (to wit; the sci-fi lyrics of "The Wheel") but it just didn't work. The Grinding Wheel is a huge step down from its predecessors, so go back to them if you want the best Overkill has to offer because it isn't here.
