Interviews Xasthur

Interview with Malefic

Interview conducted by Chris Mitchell (Desolate Gale)

Date online: October 22, 2004

*Editors Note - This interview was originally done in November of 2003 and was kept short at the request of the band.

Q: How are you doing Malefic?

A: I'm okay, I suppose.

Q: Can you give us a quick history of your band?

A: The band dates back to '96, became a one person band around 2000 after many line up troubles from 96-99.

Q: Which artists/bands have inspired the music of Xasthur?

A: I'd say Deinonychus, Burzum, Sinoath, Mutiilation, Graveland, Manes and Thergothon are the main bands that inspired me to play black metal.

Q: Are you satisfied with your latest release "The Funeral of Being"? Is there anything you would have done differently?

A: I'm somewhat satisfied, I think a few improvements were made at least, considering that this album was made with minimal recording gear, if I knew then what I know now, I would have taken what I know now (as of '04) and used these better recording techniques, I learn as I go along I suppose. It's not a perfect album by any means, but I tell you this, I put all of my energy, obsession and soul into it.

Q: The track listing on "The Funeral of Being" is very disarranged. What was the reason for doing this?

A: So that it can chase itself into a downward spiral, no beginning, no end. Besides, I feel as if I owe it to the black metal audience to confuse them and disturb them, it's the least I can do.

Q: Would you ever consider playing live with session members? If not, why?

A: No, I've lost any interest in that, it's more trouble than it's worth, it's worth it for me spending hundreds of dollars for something that wouldn't have the same effect live. I don't like working with other people, as in musically. I don't like dealing with people, as in, at all.

Q: What is your opinion on the following:

a) The Occult:

A: Answers to the unknown and that which is hidden, a different look at existence, esoteric philosophy, magic, wisdom, power.

B) Fascism

A: That's a tough one, for some reasons, it would be a way for taking out the trash, taking the way the rights that many people shouldn't have and abuse. A fist in the face of democratic liberalism that caters to trash, their voice and human rights are useless, often not earned, they deserve to have a feur (spelling) come to power by brute force, but on the other hand, some people who may not deserve to suffer under the reign of fascism probably would. There's a catch to everything sadly. Xasthur is not some political band however.

c) Astrology

A: It makes some sense.

Q: What are you currently listening to these days?

A: These days, as far as current black metal is concerned I find myself listening to Draugar, Krohm, Ondskapt, Silencer, Tenebrae in Perpetuum, Nuclear Winter (Russia), Wigrid, Drudkh, Leviathan, Warloghe, Crimson Moon, Striborg, and Celestia.

Q: If you could say one thing to god what would it be?

A: If I were to tell him anything, I would tell him that his son is a weak shame and that what he 'died for' is also a joke, he should have aborted his son from the beginning, we would all be better off today. Talking about him gives him energy, he needs our memory to exist.

Q: That covers all my questions, anything else you would like to add?

A: Thanks for the interview and interest.
