Third album from this French band is billed as "Post-Black Metal" but I don't hear that at all. There is a heavy influence from the more expansive side of the Black Metal pond, and this disc reminds me a bit of Blut Aus Nord in places, but the heavier production and deeper vocal approach recall Death Metal. At times this reminds me of epic Death Metal bands like Septicflesh as well. There is a great deal of melody in this music, giving the compositions a lot of space and depth. Lyrically, this is all about Lovecraft, which is hardly original these days, though this band seems a lot more serious about it. The music certainly has the atmosphere to carry it off, and there is a good balance between the melodic tremolo riffing and the more dissonant, heavy attack. The songwriting later in the album gets a little baggy, and there could be a lot more focus in these compositions. Even though this does not grab me as a stellar release, I enjoy it all the way through. |
