Debut from this band from Germany, who appear to be a Seamount side project. Between that and the name from an Hour of 13 song, you know this is going to be some retro Doom here, and it is. Naked Star are very much in the same kind of vein as Seamount, wringing out Sabbathy riffs with a big bottom end and a lot of crunch. The riffs are solid, the production is heavy and rough enough to sound old school, and the songs are decent if not amazing. Vocalist "Jimmy" Imhof is not great, but he's not terrible either. A lot of retro Doom bands have weak singers, and Imhof is also rather weak, though not enough so to spoil things. At least he's not tying himself in knots to try and sound like Ozzy, as so many of these guys do. Overall this is enjoyable, but not any more than that. |
