The name Walpyrgus might have you thinking Pagan or even Death Metal, but this is a band made up of musicians from bands like Twisted Tower Dire, Viper and While Heaven Wept who reach back to the NWOBHM and beyond for musical inspiration. Walpyrgus Nights is the name of the band's debut and it screams late 70s/early 80s. Catchy, harmonized vocals, galloping bass lines and up-tempo pacing drive home the often occult-themed lyrics not in a dark, oppressive way but with a "hell, yeah! Throw your fist in the air!" attitude. Walpyrgus lists a variety of bands as influences, from Iron Maiden to Rainbow to the Ramones, and you can hear them all throughout Walpyrgus Nights on tracks like "She Lives" and the album highlight "Dead Girls." If you can stop singing the chorus of "Dead Girls" after hearing it once, you've got more mind control that I do. Walpyrgus takes me back to when we didn't have labels or worry about our music being so serious or "cvlt" or "tr00" or whatever. All that mattered was if it was fun, and Walpyrgus Nights is a whole hell of a lot of fun. |
