Ymir's Blood plays a mix of Pagan and Traditional Heavy Metal that departs from the "typical" Viking formula by featuring mostly clean vocals, the exception being "Origin of Iron" which features Gorephilia's Henu at the microphone, riffing that stays away from tremolo picking and epic songwriting. As the singer sounds a bit like Venom's Cronos I'd slot Ymir's Blood in the Bathory category with songwriting a few notches below Quorthon at his peak. Their self-titled second album contains four originals with "Vipunen Wisdom" being the best of the bunch with a mean riff and cool chorus along with a cover of Led Zeppelin's classic "Immigrant Song" that doesn't make me miss the original but isn't all that bad. Ymir's Blood is decent but I can't say much of it sticks around after the album is done and the band still seems to be finding and perfecting their sound. Check out Ymir's Blood if Black Pagan Metal is getting old. |
