Muro is a Spanish band that's been around since the very early 80s and while countrymen like Baron Rojo enjoyed a modicum of international notoriety, I had never heard of them until Fighter Records decided to reissue their sixth album, El Cuarto Jinete. Based on the pounding bass, chugging riffs and throaty vocals, I may have to go back and explore the rest of Muro's discography. The band adheres to the tried-and-true formula of vocals/guitars/drums and eschews effects (other than the spoken-word intro) opting to simply play hard, fast and mean. They mix speedier material that recalls more modern acts like Wizard and Gamma Ray with mid-paced tracks that would make 80s-era Accept and Manowar proud. As an English speaker, I find it challenging to really latch on to songs sung in other languages but even though I had to look up what "Sobrevivir" means ("Survive") that didn't stop me from singing along by the third chorus, a testament to Muro's songwriting. There's nothing groundbreaking on El Cuarto Jinete but that shouldn't stop you from throwing your fist in the air when you aren't playing air guitar or drums. |
