What do you get when you combine the bombast and pomp of Rhapsody with the dark emotions and atmosphere of a band like Evenescence? Groups like Tristania, right. You also get new(er) bands like Bulgaria's Pagliacci and their EP, Yours Sincerely, Sister Josephine. The hallmarks are here; clean and harsh singing (male and female), minor chords, emotional deliveries, etc. Everything is played well and the air of gloom is effectively conveyed. The songwriting isn't as strong as it sounds like the band thinks it is based on their performances, but I cannot fault them for giving it their all. It does sound like they are overdoing it on occasion, though. Yours Sincerely, Sister Josephine is an entry into a crowded field dominated by more established bands but I've certainly heard a lot worse. Pagliacci are pointed in the right direction but will need to step it up if they want to make waves. |
