Accept has enjoyed quite the second life since adding vocalist Mark Tornillo and releasing Blood of the Nations in 2010. Follow-ups in the same vein followed in 2012 (Stalingrad) and 2014 (Blind Rage) and now in 2017 we get The Rise of Chaos. If you were expecting a shift in style, you'll be disappointed. More of what we've come to expect from this veteran band infiltrates The Rise of Chaos; big riffs, gritty singing and those iconic Accept backing vocals that just beg you to sing along. That's not to say The Rise of Chaos lives up to its predecessors. The riffs are big and the solos are sweet but the sound of the album is strangely restrained. In my review for Blood of the Nations I described how it kicked my ass but no matter how loud I play The Rise of Chaos it never jumps out of the speakers. Add in Tornillo's lyrics about the sad state of world affairs and complaints about the march of technological change and Accept sound like a bunch of old men moaning about how things were better in the "old days." I won't say The Rise of Chaos is bad, its Accept after all, but the band really played it safe and it feels like they just didn't put in the full effort this time. I'll take Blood of the Nations any day. |
