Necrytis is a new band featuring ex-Onward guitarist Toby Knapp and former Pandemonium drummer Shane Wacaster, along with bassist Mark Sobus. If you were hoping for some Onward-style Progressive/Power Metal, you are in luck. The band's debut, Countersighns, is a potent slab of pure US Metal featuring Knapp's guitar wizardry and Wacaster channeling the dearly departed Michael Grant's eclectic vocal lines. It adds up to a listening experience that is accessible and challenging at the same time. It's easy to sing along with the choruses of "Sentry's Scream" and "My Asylum" where tracks like "Daemon Angelus" require a few extra listens to fully absorb all the nuances of the performances. Time well spent, rest assured. Knapp has lost none of his ability to create memorable leads and will have guitarists and non-guitarist alike marveling at the sounds he creates, adding to the songs' appeal. Necrytis came out of nowhere for me but I couldn't be happier Knapp and crew created Countersighns and that Pure Steel Records released it to the masses. If you love Onward, Fates Warning and Crimson Glory, you need to hear what Necrytis are offering. You won't be sorry. |
