I remember reviewing this Finnish Death/Thrash group's demo for another publication some years ago and making comparisons to Lamb of God. After listening to the band's debut album, The Deathcantation, several times I haven't changed my view much because L.o.G.'s presence is still a big part of the band's root sound. Perhaps this influence is not present as much as before, but it's still there (the song "Mercury Vortex Ritual" is a good example). These Finns have tried to be more innovative and original, reshaping their performance by using unusual chords and tricky song structures that have a lot of groove to them, electrifying listeners and giving them a good reason to return to this opus. I cannot stop listening to the song "Void," which has a mesmerizing, haunting feel to it as well as some beautiful clean vocals, courtesy of Henri Hämäläinen. The more extreme end is represented by "The Automaton," which is simply packed with the violent, dark aggression of a dying star. All in all, The Deathcantation is a versatile mix of modern and extreme Death and Thrash Metal, which these lads can be proud of. |
