My first Enslaved album was Mardraum and that kicked some major ass, as did their previous material. After that, they slowly started to get weird. So, whenever they have a new album coming out, I wonder whether I'm in for disappointment or rejoicing. E is about half and half. It's a mix of their past with black/Viking metal that just rocks your socks off and of their later, more artsy and progressive material with clean, sorrowful vocals which I've come to love or hate. I don't know if they were trying to appeal to their different fan bases here, but if they did I think they managed to strike the right balance. It has its lengths but overall, it's not boring and there's enough good stuff on it. This is one of those albums that's worth sampling before buying, unless you're an unconditional fan of the band, of course. |
