Here's how the first couple of listens of this album went: I was busy doing stuff, so I just had the music playing in the background without paying much attention. Then it hit me, but I thought, "no way". I e-mailed Sargon and asked him, "Hey, is the new The Chasm all instrumental, or have I really not been paying attention?" Well, I wasn't really paying attention but, yes, this new opus is all instrumental. Yikes! This is unmistakably The Chasm. If no one tells you, you'll still recognize it as such since their signature sound is alive and well. I can't think of another band that sounds like them. What's different is how much more intricate and somewhat progressive their songs sound this time around. Some passages remind me of some obscure progressive thrash and death metal I've heard in the past. The Chasm aren't exactly the straightforward type to begin with, but this time they cranked that up to 11. This stuff will make your head spin with all its twists. It's not particularly in your face or "brutal", but very melodic and kind of depressing at times. Depending on my mood, I either like it or find it a little boring on the side; it's an album that requires your attention. I must say I'm disappointed by the lack of vocals. Daniel Corchado has some of the best vocals in death metal and here we have a full album without any of it. I could have seen his vocal style bringing an extra dimension to this – as if the album isn't "busy" enough. If you've heard the band's previous material, be ready for a bit of a culture shock even though their melodic death metal sound is still unmistakable. An interesting release, to say the least. |
