Death SS is an often-overlooked pack of Italian weirdos, led by vocalist Steve Sylvester (the 'SS' in the band's name). Formed in 1977, and undergoing line-up changes aplenty (cult artist Paul Chain was once in the ranks), 1988 finally saw the release of a proper full-length, ...in Death of Steve Sylvester, reissued in 2017 by Shadow Kingdom Records. ...in Death of Steve Sylvester is a rather strange amalgamation of heavy metal, speed/thrash metal and gothic rock, all topped with Sylvester's unique voice. The album has a typical mix for the period, but the entire thing is lightly coated in a morose, crypt-like atmosphere, bringing to mind the heyday of 70s Giallos (Italian horror flicks) Highlights include opener, "Vampire" with its speedy verses, and the rocking "Black Mummy", though the album is solid from start to finish. |
